Key Events:
In 1826, the American Temperance Society was established in every state, with thousands of local auxiliary groups in each state. In 1835, about 1.5 million, or 12% of the free population, had joined the society. In 1836, the Society held its first major conference in Saratoga, NY, and changed their name the American Temperance Union. Durring the 1840s, other groups, such as the Washtonians, who had about 11 percent of Baltimore's free population, had faced success. By the 1850s, the consumption of alcohol dropped from 5 gallons per capa, to 2 gallons per capa.
